Procurando pedras raras, dei com a lontra morta
decompondo-se na linha da maré, e carreguei pelo resto do dia o odor do seu brutal
adeus. Aquele impetuoso alarido que o catador de ostras faz
chegou ecoando pela enseada rochosa
onde um cormorão se alimentava e submergia na baía
e de onde uma garça-real irrompeu de um rochedo onde estivera invisível,
flutuou por um tempo, e se pôs de pé novamente – um hieróglifo
ou apenas a longevidade refletindo nela mesma
entre o céu nublado e o mar levemente encapelado.

Esta foi a manhã após seu sonho de morrer, de ser conduzido
e dizer que não importava. Uma borboleta ziguezagueou sobre
as pedras aveludadas pelas ondas, e onde me virei
para subir até a estrada novamente, um casal estava sentado em um trailer azul
apreciando seus cigarros após o café da manhã (cheiro
azul de fumaça, o cheiro escuro e espesso de café fresco)
e conversando em voz baixa, um respondendo após o outro,
o rádio dando as notícias do dia por trás deles. Estava quente.
Tudo parecia em paz. Eu podia sentir o sol emergindo da água.

One Morning

Looking for distinctive stones, I found the dead otter
rotting by the tideline, and carried all day the scent of this savage
valediction. That headlong high sound the oystercatcher makes
came echoing through the rocky cove
where a cormorant was feeding and submarining in the bay
and a heron rose off a boulder where he’d been invisible,
drifted a little, stood again – a hieroglyph
or just longevity reflecting on itself
between the sky clouding over and the lightly ruffled water.

This was the morning after your dream of dying, of being held
and told it didn’t matter. A butterfly went jinking over
the wave-silky stones, and where I turned
to go up the road again, a couple in a blue camper sat
smoking their cigarettes over their breakfast coffee (blue
scent of smoke, the thick dark smell of fresh coffee)
and talking in quiet voices, first one then the other answering,
their radio telling the daily news behind them. It was warm.
All seemed at peace. I could feel the sun coming off the water.
