Muitos dos meus amigos estão sozinhos
e sabem demais para serem felizes,
embora ainda queiram mergulhar
até o fundo do oceano verde
e trazer de volta uma moeda de ouro na mão.
Uma mulher que conheço desperta na tarde morta
e fala com o marido morto,
as janelas, fotografias em branco.
Na varanda, meu irmão, mãos nos bolsos,
olha fixamente o riacho que corre.
O que houve?
Nada.
As vacas permanecem em suas próprias tardes lentas.
Os cavalos colhem frutos de rosa silvestre ao sol
do mesmo modo que eu ansiava por alguém há muito tempo.
E como era isso?
A porta se abrindo e ninguém em nenhum dos lados.

Middle Age
Many of my friends are alone
and know too much to be happy
though they still want to dive
to the bottom of the green ocean
and bring back a gold coin
in their hand. A woman I know wakes
in the late evening and talks
to her late husband,
the windows blank photographs.
On the porch, my brother,
hands in pockets,
stares at the flowing stream.
What’s wrong? Nothing.
The cows stand
in their own slow afternoons.
The horses gather
wild rose hips in the sun
the way I longed for someone
long ago. What was it like?
The door opening
and no one on either side.
