O fone fora do gancho,

The Other End of the Line
After he passed, my mother spoke about him
as if he were still there. She complained
if he didn’t come to her in dreams.
You haven’t gone to see him yet, she said,
meaning it had been some time since
I’d stood over his grave. For me, there was more
silence. The telephone receiver off the hook,
no one there at the other end of the line.
The person you are trying to reach
is currently unavailable, said the automated
voice. And there was so much left to say.
