Wildrose Season
It’s the season of wildrose and mint, Sosylos,
the season of chickpeas and first-cut sprouts,
of smelts and salted cheeses, of curly-edged
lettuce whose new leaves light transfuses
with a half-remembered glow. Even so,
have you noticed how this year something’s changed?
How we no longer take our morning walks
along the newly poppied shore, picnic
under the plane trees, or hurry over drinks
the sinking lozenge of the evening sun?
How Antigenes and Bacchios, our sun-bronzed,
buff, athletic friends, were flirting yesterday,
and today we carry them to their graves?
