Também aos domingos
meu pai se levantava cedo
e se vestia no frio azul escuro,
depois, com as mãos rachadas doloridas
do trabalho ao relento durante a semana, fazia
o fogo abafado arder. Nunca ninguém lhe agradeceu.
Eu acordava e ouvia o
frio se estilhaçando, se partindo.
Quando a casa já estava aquecida, ele me chamava,
e lentamente eu me levantava e me vestia,
temendo a raiva crônica daquela casa,
Eu lhe falava com indiferença,
a ele, que expulsara o frio
e também engraxara meus melhores sapatos.
O que sabia eu, o que sabia eu
dos austeros e solitários ofícios do amor?

Those Winter Sundays
Sundays too
my father got up early
and put his clothes on in the blue black cold,
then with cracked hands that ached
from labor in the weekday weather made
banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him.
I’d wake and hear the
cold splintering, breaking.
When the rooms were warm, he’d call,
and slowly I would rise and dress,
fearing the chronic angers of that house,
Speaking indifferently
to him,
who had driven out the cold
and polished my good shoes as well.
What did I know, what did I know
of love’s austere and lonely offices?
