Ela desistiu do sexo.
Desistiu de viajar.
Desistiu da euforia
do álcool no cérebro
ao primeiro gole de vinho —
aquele doce ardor
ao deslizar pela garganta.
E as discussões,
as celebrações,
ela desistiu disso também,
como desistiu dos livros —
suas páginas pesadas demais para folhear.
O que resta é um borrão
de céu onde o tempo
ensaia seus próprios finais.
O que resta é o vazio azul
por trás da vela branca
da touca engomada da enfermeira,
conduzindo-a para o mar.

Last Rites
She’s given up sex.
She’s given up travel.
She’s given up the rush
of alcohol to the brain
at the first sip of wine—
that sweet burn
as it slips down the throat.
And her quarrels,
her celebrations,
she’s given them up too
as she’s given up books—
their pages too heavy to turn.
What’s left is a blur
of sky where the weather
rehearses its own finales.
What’s left is blue emptiness
behind the white sail
of the nurse’s starched cap,
steering her out to sea.
